CS Nakhumicha has urged Kenyans to be truthful and open to Community Health Promoters as a means to screen and increase chances of early detection for cancer cases. Speaking this morning, the CS noted that cancer is still faced with fear and stigma which needs to be addressed.

“To defeat cancer, we must address stigma”, CS Nakhumicha.

The CS said that same effort the country collectively deployed, 20 years ago, to address stigma related to HIV/AIDS must be deployed with regards to Cancer.

Cancer care must go beyond the physical, it must also address the fear, shame, and guilt associated with the disease. Stigma negatively impacts patients with Cancer, delays access to care and impacts the chances of survival.

The National Cancer Institute with the Ministry of Health is creating awareness and a platform for an open conversation about the disease.

Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha acknowledged the existing limitations within the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) system and highlighted the ongoing reforms aimed at addressing these gaps, particularly concerning diseases like Cancer.

According to the CS, the government is putting in measures to set up regional cancer centers all over the country.

Hon. Nakhumicha also outlined the comprehensive coverage under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), specifying that screenings, diagnostics, and treatments for Cancer will now be fully covered. This includes a 100% coverage for screenings, diagnostics, and treatment, emphasizing the inclusion of Cancer care within the publicly funded primary health system.

President Ruto’s government has established a dedicated fund within the reformed system known as the Emergency, Critical, and Chronic Illness Fund. This fund is designed to provide financial assistance to individuals facing severe health challenges and covers various aspects, including Cancer care, from screening to rehabilitation and palliative care.

The CS revealed the financial requirements for the Emergency, Critical, and Chronic Illness Fund, stating the estimated budget needed annually for Cancer care and other critical illnesses. Out of the total required amount, a significant portion will be allocated specifically for Cancer care, indicating the prioritization of resources for tackling this disease.

The CS emphasized the role of the Social Health Authority in ensuring comprehensive health coverage, highlighting the mechanisms in place within the reformed system to cater to screenings, diagnostics, treatments, and ongoing care for chronic illnesses like Cancer without exclusion or hesitation.
