In a move to tackle traffic congestion in Nairobi, the government has announced the opening of four Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines. This initiative was unveiled in the National Treasury’s Fourth Medium-Term Plan 2023-2027, which focuses on supporting equitable growth.

“The project aims to revolutionize transportation in Nairobi by reducing costs and travel time,” according to a government official.

The four BRT lines are deliberately planned to reduce traffic congestion for commuters traveling to Kitengela, Ngong, Kiambu, and Kikuyu. The wide network will cover vital localities, with the first line connecting Limuru, Kangemi, the CBD, Imara Daima, Athi River, and Kitengela.

“The impact of these BRT lines will be monumental in easing congestion and enhancing the overall commuting experience,” stated a transportation expert.

These initiatives, funded via Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), demonstrate the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity. The successful development of the Nairobi Expressway through PPP demonstrates the efficiency of this paradigm in relieving urban congestion.
