The government has signed a monumental grant agreement with the United States, securing approximately Sh198 million in technical assistance to bolster the country’s public procurement sector.

The grant, facilitated by the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), aims to enhance the value-for-money approach in public procurement through the development of a comprehensive procurement manual and guide for suppliers.

During an event in Nairobi, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u and US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman officially inked the deal, marking a major step towards transforming Kenya’s public procurement process.

Speaking about the agreement, Ndung’u expressed his optimism about the impact of the grant, stating, “The financial infusion will enable smarter, long-term investments, ultimately resulting in substantial savings for the government.”

Highlighting the importance of the partnership with the US, Ndung’u emphasized, “The US is a key partner in trade and investment in Kenya. The two countries will continue fostering the long-standing strengthened cooperation that exists.”

In response to the agreement, US Ambassador Meg Whitman also expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “We are proud to support Kenya’s efforts to strengthen its public procurement sector. This grant represents our commitment to fostering economic growth and development in Kenya.”
