President William Ruto has announced plans to overhaul the African Union, emphasizing the need for accountability and functionality within the organization. Speaking in Ghana, Ruto outlined his vision for a reformed AU, stating, “It is our intention as heads of State to make sure that we reform the African Union to make it fit for purpose.”

Ruto highlighted the existing challenges within the AU, noting the lack of an accountability mechanism within the Executive and the perceived ineffectiveness of the AU parliament. He stressed the importance of establishing a court to adjudicate on matters affecting the organization to ensure accountability and effectiveness.

During his visit to Ghana, President Ruto received accolades for his leadership and advocacy on critical global issues such as climate change and international monetary system reform. Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo commended Ruto as an exemplary African leader dedicated to upholding principles of accountability and due process.

“Apart from your commendable domestic performance, you have in the course of your first term become one of the strongest voices of the African continent on two of the greatest issues of our time,” Akufo-Addo praised.

Akufo-Addo also lauded Ruto for Kenya’s reemergence as a prominent player on the international stage under his leadership.
