Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, has announced a series of measures aimed at reducing the alarming rate of road accidents in Kenya.

Speaking at Mugoiri Girls High School in Kahuro, Murang’a, Murkomen expressed grave concern over the escalating number of accidents, particularly those involving students from Chavakali High School, Kabsabet Boys, and Kenyatta University.

Murkomen stated, “We are going to employ technology to monitor how vehicles are managed starting with school buses which will be fitted with vehicular telematics.” He further added, “With telematics, the truck managers are able to check on the driver throughout the journey making sure the driver is alert.”

Moreover, the CS revealed plans to collaborate with Safaricom to ensure the affordability of telematics for schools, emphasizing that the technology will solely focus on safety. Additionally, speed cameras are set to be installed on roads for instant fining of traffic violations, with Murkomen urging passengers to be proactive in ensuring vehicle safety.

The Ministry of Transport, in partnership with traffic police and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), is working tirelessly to restore order and safety on Kenyan roads.
