The leader of Turkana County, Hon. Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai Napotikan, and Loima Constituency MP Hon. Protus Akujah, earlier today visited the Ministry of Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi and PS Jonathan Mueke.

The group held a discussion on the commercialization of livestock in Turkana County. The county is home to one of the largest herds of livestock in the country.

As a first step, it was agreed that there is a need to complete the Lomidat Slaughter House in Lokichogio and the tannery in Lodwar.

The completion of these two projects will be significant in the processing of dairy products in the county which will not only increase earnings for the farmers and boost the local economy, it will also help improve the country’s food security.

The completion will also see an increase in employment opportunities in the county. Many lives will be directly impacted by these opportunities.

Value addition in the tannery will see an improvement in the country’s exports, helping grow the country’s economy.

The Kenya Kwanza government seeks to decrease the amount of food imports to empower Kenyan farmers as well as allocate the funds used in imports to development projects.

Partnerships with county governments will go a long way in bolstering food security in the country.
