Hon. Peninah Malonza, the CS to the Ministry of EAC, ASALs and Regional Development has stated that the Ministry is currently responding to the escalating humanitarian needs caused by the rising number of affected persons across the country due to above-normal rainfall.

“We have allocated relief supplies to priority hotspot counties, and efforts are underway to address the dire situation,” Malonza stated while on visit to Karung’a Village in Enziu Location, Mwingi Central Consistency, Kitui County where she distributed essential food and non-food items to affected families impacted by the floods resulting from flooding of River Katiliku

President Ruto’s government, along with various stakeholders, is actively mobilizing resources to support affected communities, safeguard livelihood, assets and undertake emergency infrastructure repairs and maintenance.

The CS also visited the coastal region where she met the Kwale Governor, Hon. Fatuma Achani to discuss the level of preparedness to respond to the flood situation in the county.

After visiting the hundreds of families that have been affected by the floods in Kwale Cabinet Secretaries Peninah Malonza and Salim Mvurya affirmed the government’s unwavering support for flood victims in the Coast region, emphasizing immediate relief efforts for affected families.

CS Malonza was also accompanied by Nyali MP Mohammed Ali, Nominated Senator Miraj Abdillahi, and other leaders, where they distributed essential supplies to affected households while also assessing the damage of floods that continue to ravage most parts of the Coastal region.

More than 10 individuals lost their lives, and over 70,000 residents were affected by the floods, with Kwale experiencing three casualties and 790 households, equating to roughly 6,000 individuals, affected by heavy rains.

The government has allocated funds to provide essential aid such as food, shelter, medical assistance, sleeping nets, and mattresses to mitigate the impacts of the floods, ensuring affected individuals receive necessary support.

President Ruto’s government has also initiated evacuation and accommodation plans for affected individuals, dispatched aid including food and bedding, deployed engineers to assess infrastructure damage, and prepared boats for potential evacuation if heavy rains persist.

 The authorities underscored the significance of prioritizing life over property and advised residents to prioritize safety.
