The East African Community (EAC) is considering domesticating flights within the region, potentially leading to reduced flight prices and expanded routes.

The proposal, discussed by the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) on March 12, 2024, aims to create a unified airspace for all airlines registered and licensed by EAC partner states.

MP Kennedy Musyoka Kalonzo highlighted the disparity in flight costs within the EAC, stating, “Just as I was sitting here, I quickly checked out how much our flight from here [Nairobi] to Dubai was, and I discovered it is 37,000 Kenyan shillings [approx. $266], while a flight to visit our neighbours… is 100,000 Kenyan shillings [approx. $720].”

The motion, championed by MPs from Uganda and Kenya, seeks to promote trade and tourism while addressing the high costs of regional flights. If approved, the proposal is expected to undergo further deliberation by the EAC Council of Ministers and the Presidents of the member countries in April.

The initiative comes at a crucial time following the resolution of aviation disputes between Kenya and Tanzania, with the potential to enhance connectivity and economic cooperation within the EAC. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of this transformative aviation proposal.
