Agriculture ministers from 15 African countries have gathered in Nairobi to discuss pressing challenges facing the agricultural sector in the region. The meeting, hosted in the country, aims to strengthen agricultural research efforts in Eastern and Central Africa.
Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, the patron of the council of ministers representing the 15 member countries, emphasized the importance of establishing centers of excellence for key crops in Africa. He stated, “We are seeking to promote biofortified crops to enhance food and nutrition security in Eastern and Central Africa.”
During a media briefing on the third council meeting of the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA), Linturi highlighted the urgent need to address issues such as aflatoxin contamination and emerging pests and diseases. He also stressed the importance of fostering partnerships with the private sector to boost trade and commercialization of agricultural technologies and innovations.
Dr. Enock Warinda, executive director of ASARECA, emphasized the significance of collaboration among agriculture ministers, donors, and development partners to find practical solutions. He stated, “We want to ensure food and nutrition insecurity is no longer a concern, but a guarantee for all.” The meeting aims to develop regional programs that support youth, alleviate poverty, and provide assistance to smallholder farmers.
