The government has announced the acquisition of Ksh 39.3 billion to fund initiatives addressing the effects of climate change. Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u revealed the significant funding for the Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program during a high-level meeting in Kisumu County.

Ndung’u stated, “Our focus is on enhancing our national systems to ensure funds reach the most vulnerable individuals… responding to shocks and evolving trends.”

The program aims to support vulnerable populations in areas severely affected by climate change, with a particular emphasis on ecological restoration to shield communities from adverse impacts like drought.

Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya echoed the importance of counties taking the lead in climate change mitigation efforts, emphasizing the need for grassroots financial alignment. International partners, including officials from the German government, the World Bank, and others, expressed support for the initiative set to roll out in 45 counties.

President William Ruto’s commitment to combating climate change was highlighted, with plans to plant 15 billion trees by 2030. His efforts were recently recognized as he was listed in the prestigious TIME 100 Climate List for his dedication to addressing climate change effects.
