Kenya’s tea industry has achieved a milestone by earning Ksh200 billion in exports.
According to a ranking compiled by software trading company, Contago, Kenya was positioned as the second-highest earner, only surpassed by China, which reported earnings of approximately Ksh330 billion. This achievement solidifies Kenya’s position as a leading producer of black tea, highly sought after by numerous countries.
In response to this achievement, a spokesperson for the Kenyan tea industry stated, “Kenya’s tea sector has once again demonstrated its prowess in the global market, solidifying its position as a major player in the industry.”
The report also highlighted Kenya’s dominance in tea exports, surpassing major tea-consuming countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom. Notably, Kenya’s key trade partners for tea exports were identified as Pakistan, Egypt, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Iran, Russia, and Sudan.
Furthermore, the Tea Board of Kenya (TBK) reported that Kenya exported a record-breaking 410 million kilograms of tea to its global trade partners in 2023, indicating a substantial increase from the previous year’s 388 million kilograms. The TBK attributed this surge in exports to favorable weather conditions experienced in the latter half of the year.
