Kenya Power has announced the establishment of a cutting-edge Ksh50 million National Control Centre in the Coastal area to aid in the fight against blackouts in the country.

This new facility, sponsored by GIZ under the VRE project in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, is expected to change electricity distribution in the country.

In a statement, Kenya Power CEO Joseph Siror highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “Our grid is expanding rapidly with increased customer numbers and this calls for the deployment of strategic initiatives that are meant to secure and strengthen the quality of power supply.”

The National Control Centre will not only act as a backup system in case of emergencies but will also serve as a training hub for power system operators to enhance their technical skills. This move comes as Kenya joins a select group of African countries with similar backup facilities, including South Africa, Algeria, and Morocco.

Siror further added, “The power transmission company would construct new lines to provide alternative supply points to our customers to minimize power outages.”
