The Ministry of Health has issued a call for public comments on the Social Health Insurance Act, aimed at paving the way for the implementation of the Social Health Insurance Fund.

Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha made a direct appeal to the public, stating, “We are seeking your input on the draft regulations to ensure that the Social Health Insurance Act reflects the needs and concerns of all stakeholders.”

This announcement follows the Court of Appeal’s decision to lift an order that had previously halted the implementation of the Social Health Insurance Fund, allowing for public participation.

In response to the court’s decision, a government spokesperson stated, “We welcome the opportunity for public engagement as we move forward with the implementation of the Social Health Insurance Fund. The input from the public will be crucial in shaping the future of healthcare in our country.”

The Act includes provisions such as mandatory registration and contributions for accessing public services, which remain suspended pending the outcome of an appeal filed by the State.

Additionally, the Act stipulates that non-Kenyan residents who have been in the country for more than 12 months are eligible for membership in the Fund, while those staying for less than 12 months must have travel health insurance coverage.
