The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has issued a nationwide warning to Kenyans against purchasing Benylin pediatric 100mls cough syrup from South Africa. The caution comes after the product was flagged by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria, citing serious quality issues.

PPB revealed that the South African-manufactured syrup, Batch No 329304, contained alarming levels of diethylene glycol, a hazardous substance. The board emphasized the potential dangers of diethylene glycol, stating, “The contaminant is toxic to humans and can lead to severe health complications, including death.”

Following the recall, PPB has taken swift action, directing all pharmaceutical outlets to cease the distribution and sale of the product immediately. They urge the public to return any purchased syrup to healthcare facilities without delay. PPB also advised individuals experiencing adverse reactions to seek urgent medical assistance.

In a statement, the PPB assured the public of their commitment to upholding quality and safety standards for medicines in Kenya. They encouraged vigilance from the public in reporting any concerns regarding medicine quality or adverse reactions.
