President William Ruto has announced that Facebook and Instagram, operating under the META umbrella, will commence compensating content creators in Kenya.

Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations today Tuesday, December 12, 2023, the Head of State said that he had engaged in discussions with Meta, and the company has agreed to allow creators to monetize their content.

“I bring exciting news for our creatives and those who conceive and produce content through Facebook and Instagram. Just yesterday, Meta committed to assisting creators in Kenya in earning income for crafting original content.’’

President Ruto continued by emphasizing Kenya’s rich pool of highly educated, skilled, and dynamic young people, stating, “Kenya possesses impressive credentials as a source of highly professional human capital with highly educated, trained, skilled, and dynamic young people.” He also highlighted the government’s deliberate efforts to forge bilateral agreements with various countries, opening up global opportunities for Kenyan talent.

This significant development follows a pilot program with eligible creators in the country, paving the way for Meta to expand monetization opportunities and allow more creators to earn a living doing what they love.
