Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has raised concerns about the absence of a night station along the Nairobi-Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) route.
During a meeting with Taita Taveta County leaders, Mutua emphasized the need for a stop at Voi to allow passengers to rest and refresh during night travels.
Mutua expressed his commitment to addressing this issue, stating, “I committed to writing to the Kenya Railways to reconsider this decision, as it negatively impacts Voi’s economy.”
He highlighted the importance of promoting local economic growth and enhancing visitor experiences through improved transport facilities.
Furthermore, the CS outlined plans to involve local communities in project tendering processes and provide training for tour guides to boost tourism in Taita Taveta.
Mutua’s proposal aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance the rail sector, with the completion of the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) line connecting the SGR Mombasa Terminus to Mombasa Old Town set for May 31, 2024.
The Kenya Railways Corporation’s initiatives to acquire new coaches and upgrade existing ones aim to elevate transportation standards and reduce costs.
Additionally, plans to establish six new passenger stations in Mombasa County signify a significant step towards improving commuter services and accessibility for residents.
