Kenya’s tourism industry had a substantial boost in 2023, with over 460,000 more visitors opting to visit the country, marking the third consecutive year of growth.

According to recent figures released in the annual tourist sector performance report, arrivals increased significantly from 1,483,752 in 2022 to 1,951,185 in 2023, indicating a 31.5% increase.

“The growth in tourist numbers underscores Kenya’s appeal as a destination offering exceptional value for money, with visitors recognizing the country’s commitment to providing top-notch experiences and services at a competitive cost,” stated a key excerpt from the report.

Notably, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport emerged as the primary gateway for tourists, accounting for a significant 69% of total arrivals, followed by Mombasa International Airport at 8%. The report also highlighted the country’s reputation as a safe and secure destination, a crucial factor in attracting visitors.

The diverse source markets contributed to Kenya’s tourism success, with the United States leading the pack with 265,310 tourists, followed by Uganda, Tanzania, and the United Kingdom. The report emphasized the strong performance of African markets, collectively representing 60% of total arrivals.

Holiday trips remained the primary reason for visiting Kenya, with 45% of tourists citing leisure as their motivation, followed by visits to friends and relatives at 24%. Business and MICE travel also played a significant role in driving visitor numbers, accounting for 24% of total visitation.

The positive growth trajectory signals a promising outlook for Kenya’s tourism industry, reflecting the country’s enduring allure as a preferred destination for travelers across the world.
